When writing your About Me or About Us page, it is important to keep in mind five more rules in addition to the ones I told you about previously, for creating your page as an effective and influential marketing too. Depending on the type of company, some things will inadvertently differ, but these are general rules that apply no matter what.

1. A solopreneur with a home based business needs a different approach to his or her About Me page than a company with employees, partners, associates, etc.

a. The solopreneur is of course, a one-person business. Don’t try to full your readers and potential clients into thinking otherwise. Using words like “we, our, and us” only serves to deceive your readers temporarily. They will figure it out, and when they do, you have lost credibility in their eyes. Be honest. You should be proud of the fact that you are a business owner. Don’t try to hide the fact that you work alone.

b. A company website, should have an about us page that promotes the business as a unified whole. It could include short paragraphs (personal bio’s) about key employees or management. If you have many employees, try alternating them throughout the year, highlighting one or two in a Featured Employee of the Month segment.

2. Make your customers and potential clients fell valued. They want to feel as if they are important to you and your company. Your About Me or About Us page should be warm and welcoming. Give them insight to your company. Put a human touch to your business.

a. Tell them how long you have been in business.

b. Tell them a little about the history of your business.

c. What are the reasons you started the business.

3. Be honest. Never lie when you are writing about your history. Don’t claim to have a master’s degree from Harvard when you really graduated from the local community college. Don’t say you worked for a Fortune 500 company when it was really a small company. Lying won’t get you anywhere, and honesty will. Being honest with your readers will go much further for you than trying to be something you aren’t. Somehow, lies eventually are found out. And when they do, it can be disastrous. You don’t want to lose that great client because of a lie!

4. Proofread and edit your words. Your writing probably isn’t perfect. No one’s is the first time around. It is imperative for you to check and double-check your work. You want to present your About Me or About Us page in a professional light. Use your spell check, but please don’t rely on it to catch everything. Words can be transposed when you are typing. For example, form and from are both recognized by spell check as words.

Consider this: if you want to say, you are taking candy from the baby, and typing it in as taking candy form a baby spell check won’t find it. Only human eyes will find the error. Believe me, someone will notice it and if that person doesn’t tell you about it, someone else will notice it. And on it goes. Many people will see it as a sign of unprofessionalism and click off your site. Have someone, besides yourself, look at what you wrote and check for errors.

5. Make sure your content flows smoothly. It needs to make sense to the reader. This is another good reason to have someone else read it. Always keep in mind that your About me and About us pages are a marketing tool. These pages profile you and your business. They tell a story and you want your story to be professionally polished.
